Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
PSHE helps children and young people to be safe, healthy and prepared for life's opportunities. The PSHE themes that we teach at Belford Primary School are designed to help our pupils foster lifelong aspirations, goals and values.
We don't see PSHE as a school subject, but as an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge that children need to thrive now and in the future. This includes helping them deal with issues that they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change.
Our PSHE education curriculum is carefully planned and we follow a sequenced, spiral programme that builds on prior learning as pupils progress through school.
Our PSHE programme includes Relationships Education, economic wellbeing, careers education and teaching the children about personal safety.
Learning opportunities are spread across three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Please refer to the PSHE Programme of Study below. This clearly outlines the intent of our PSHE curriculum.

Five Ways to Wellbeing
In addition to our PSHE curriculum, we actively promote across school, five ways to wellbeing. Evidence suggests there are 5 steps you can take to help improve your mental health and wellbeing, these are connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give. We talk with the children about how these different approaches can be used to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.

Connect : Spend time developing and nurturing relationships with friends, family and neighbours.
Be active : Try to find an activity that you enjoy, and that keeps you active, such as walking, swimming, cycling or playing football. Evidence shows that an improvement in your physical health can help improve your mental health.
Keep learning: Learning new skills can boost confidence and give you a sense of achievement.
Give : Helping others, saying thank you, or giving someone a smile can help to improve your self-esteem and improve your emotional health.
Take notice : Being more aware of the present moment, the world around you and your own feelings and thoughts, can help you to positively change how you're feeling about life.
